Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political activism, particularly among the youth, plays a critical role in shaping the political landscape of many countries. In Nigeria, youth activism has been instrumental in advocating for political change, good governance, and the protection of democratic rights. Sokoto South LGA, in Sokoto State, is an ideal setting for studying the effects of political activism on youth mobilization, as it has witnessed significant political engagement and activism from the youth in recent years.
The involvement of young people in political activism is often seen as a response to issues such as unemployment, political exclusion, and corruption. Political activists use various platforms, including protests, social media, and youth-led organizations, to mobilize young people around political causes and encourage participation in electoral processes. This study seeks to assess the role of political activism in mobilizing youth in Sokoto South LGA, focusing on how activism influences their political behavior, voting patterns, and engagement in political processes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing political activism among the youth in Sokoto South LGA, there remains a significant gap in youth participation in formal political processes such as voting, running for office, and joining political parties. The lack of adequate platforms for youth engagement, coupled with socio-economic challenges, often results in disillusionment and political apathy among young people. This study aims to examine the relationship between political activism and youth mobilization in Sokoto South LGA, exploring how activism can be used as a tool for encouraging greater political participation.

1.5 Research Hypotheses
1. Political activism significantly increases youth mobilization for political participation in Sokoto South LGA.
2. Youth activism influences political behavior and voting patterns in Sokoto South LGA.
3. The effectiveness of youth mobilization through political activism is constrained by socio-economic challenges and political exclusion in Sokoto South LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it will contribute to the understanding of how political activism can be leveraged to mobilize young people for political participation in Nigeria. By examining the impact of youth activism in Sokoto South LGA, the study will provide valuable insights into the factors that influence youth political behavior and voting patterns. The findings will be beneficial for political parties, government agencies, and civil society organizations working to enhance youth participation in the political process.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the impact of political activism on youth mobilization in Sokoto South LGA. It will examine youth-led political movements, activism through social media, and the influence of political activism on voter behavior. The study will not cover other regions or LGAs in Sokoto State.
One limitation is the potential bias in respondents’ views, as some youth may be reluctant to openly discuss their political activism. Additionally, challenges in data collection and access to activists may limit the scope of the study.
